lyrics

the ballad of john sambles

chapter 1:
there once was a witch,
a pretty little witch
the prettiest witch in oregon
she gave to me a crown of silk
and i poured her a cup of milk.
she said that crown
would make me king
"the mightiest king in oregon"
and i could do most anything
as long as i did nothing
that would keep her from her
evil ways

but her evil ways were weird
and they worried me
she kept cursing all the ladies
in the faire countrie
but i was there and i wanted power
so i took that crown
over my hair and as i put it on
my eyes cast down i was aware
that it would be a debt
to be repaid in full
by fools and kings

chapter 2:
i once was a king,
the mightiest king in oregon
a heavy sword was on his knee,
but no one needed killing.
well i loved a maiden fair,
the fairest maid in oregon
bright her face and dark her hair,
i swore i would do nothing
nothing til i held
that maiden in my arms

but the maiden's arms were
wrapped around another man
and the witches curses
coursed all across the land
so she would bleed until she bore,
and so would all the rest
so i picked up my sword
and i crossed my breast
and i killed another man
believing it was best
the bane of fools and kings

chapter 3:
once there was a maiden fair,
a fairer maid was never had
never ever have i seen
a fairer maid be made so mad
the maddest maid in oregon
this is why she was so mad:
the tyrant king of oregon
had killed the only love she had
and love is all that matters
here in oregon

she rode upon a palfry
to my castle gate
and she threw herself upon me
full of rage and hate
but the little witch was in the wings
with a black arrow
and she threw it to the maiden's heart
and it peirced her soul
and now the maid is frozen
in the garden of my castle
the pain of fools and kings

chapter 4:
there once was a cheese,
a real fine cheese
the finest cheese in oregon
the little witch was asking
"please, could i have a smidgeon?"
could she just have a little bite
of the finest cheese in oregon
i said "my dear, i cannot wear
this silken crown of oregon,
and my dear i cannot bear
to see good folk get frozen
by your magic spells"

then she called a magic spell
to make a mighty blast
the whole continent was frozen
by the spell she cast
except for me, cause i was there
and so beyond her power
i looked into her eyes
and i took off her crown
i was aware that it was all
only a make believe
so too are fools and kings
